Scottville Clown Band

It's the highlight for anyone who attends Ludington's July 4th Freedom Festival Parade when the sounds of "The Stripper" from afar bring people to their feet. Then you see the plunger, and you know it's the grand finale the one and only Scottville Clown Band, entertaining music lovers throughout the state of Michigan for over 100 years. Their wild attire and crazy antics belie the fact that this group has extraordinary musical talent.

In 1903, a musical group of Scottville merchants dressed up as hillbillies and began entertaining at local carnivals. Their popularity grew until World War II called its members away and the group disbanded. In 1947, a local businessman, Ray Schulte, resurrected the group, and the Scottville Clown Band was born again, this time for good. Sadly, the recent passing of Ray, known as the Godfather of the Clown Band, left a hole in the hearts of people everywhere, but his legacy will continue as the band marches on.

Clown Band members come from all over the state, and represent all walks of life. Their charitable contributions include funding and maintaining both the Scottville Clown Bandshell and the Museum of Music at Historic White Pine Village. They also grant thousands of dollars in scholarships for education in music and the performing arts.

Long live the wonderful and wacky Scottville Clown Band!
