Arts along the Lakeshore
One of the many murals that adorn Ludington
The face of Ludington has changed over the years, partly due to an increase in the arts. Now the area offers more than our beaches and boating-there are murals, art galleries, and theater productions to enjoy.
It began with the creation of Waterfront Park, a beautifully landscaped area overlooking the harbor and carferry docks. Families love the modern playground, picnic tables, and scenic walkways. Take note of the seven bronzed sculptures throughout the park-some have historical significance and others are just a joy to behold.
The Ludington Mural Society has been very busy, overseeing large, painted murals that have been created over the past few years. These unusual works of art depict historical people and events of Mason County. Downtown, you'll see murals along Ludington Avenue, Rath and South James Street. The Ramada Inn is the canvas for portraits of real people, and Hamlin Grocery showcases a mural of by-gone days.
There are a variety of antiques shops and art galleries, especially in the downtown area. New and exciting art galleries feature a mix of paintings, jewelry, pottery, crafts, woodworking, photography-even glass blowing demonstrations! Summer brings the very special arts and crafts fairs to Ludington,-popular events that draw thousands of visitors to the area.
A wonderful new arts and cultural center is due to open the summer of 2008, with the acquisition of the United Methodist Church in downtown Ludington. The church will be moving into their new location, allowing the Arts Council to transform this historical site into a new home for the arts in Ludington.
Sandcastles Children's Museum, in its temporary home on south James Street, will once again be open this summer from 10am-5pm Tues-Sat, and Wednesday evenings until 7pm. Inside, kids will find wonderful activities to keep them entertained, such as a tree house, sandbox, music, exploration table, discovery bins, and a theatrical stage.
Mason County is blessed to have West Shore Community College and its performing arts series. All year the college offers theatrical events that feature not only students, but many local thespians. Orchestras, bands, and even well known artists perform here, rounding out the cultural richness of this region.
